Pollinator Mural by Emma Gelman
August, 2024
Emma Gelman digitally designed this 94” x 172” wall mural depicting local pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects in order to engage the local community to raise awareness about the importance of pollinators, beneficial insects and local biodiversity through street art installation. This mural also explores the feasibility of establishing a community street art rotating outdoor exhibition space. This mural was made possible thanks to a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies Youth Climate Action Fund.
Emma originally intended to paint the mural but time, budget, and space constraints directed her to research more innovative methods of street art production and installation.
Emma researched various mural mediums and installation techniques, identified a wall suitable for installation, obtained permission from the property owners, and installed the mural.
The mural was digitally designed and printed on AlumiGraphics medium. The benefit of this medium is minimal wall damage, recyclable, easily removable material, bright colors and outdoor durability. It is the industry’s top performing product in terms of quality, ease and speed of installation, and product/brand awareness and messaging. It is also more cost effective compared to paint.
By depicting native pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects, the mural aims to encourage village residents who walk by it or come to the hardware store to purchase more earth-friendly home and garden goods and to plant pollinator-supporting annual and perennial plants.
